Welcome to 2023-24 !! Who knows what it will bring but here we go. This website is to keep you up to date on our daily activities. Let's dive into a great year!!!
Wow... each year I am so impressed with the kindergarten's ability to quickly understand the French I am using, and I think you will be too. We learn the colours in French and we review the numbers daily. If you look into the "check out this tech" you will find some videos that will help you review this basic vocab with your child. Your will also find them quickly using the question "Où est...?" which means where is... as in "où est Pete?"
Soon I will be encouraging them to use these simple sentences in French
* Puis j'aller aux toilettes s'il te plait (may I go to the washroom please)
* Peux-tu m'aider (help me please)
The children are gradually learn the ABC song, are counting daily and review the colours in French. Ask your child to sing you the songs in their reading duo-tangs and see how many numbers they know in French (out of order), how many friend's names they know and if they can point to the words as they sing the. Bonjour song. Keep sending the French duo tang to school. More things will be added periodically.
HAVE YOU MET PETE THE CAT? IN THE FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL STUDENTS MET PETE THE CAT. HE HAS SUCH A GREAT ATTITUDE.... AND ALWAYS LEAVES US POIGNANT WORDS TO LIVE BY.

The class attends library with Mme Gammel once a week.. Students are allowed to sign out 2 books, one English and one French, specifically based on interest not reading ability. These will be due the following week at the next library day, but can be returned earlier. Your child is not expected to be able to read either. They can just look up the pictures and try and tell themselves the story; and of course bring it back. Here is another opportunity for your child to take responsibility of a task.
Every Fall we take part in the Terry Fox walk; keep a look out for the date and time. Kindergarten students will walk around the school; the rest of the grades will follow the path around the field.. Donations to the cancer society will be accepted. I will send home a paper "shoe" home on which to write the name of someone your child could be running for... someone whose life has been affected by cancer. I feel this makes it more personal for the children.
During the first months of school we will be reviewing safety procedures surrounding Fire Drill, Earth Quake drills and School Lock down. I am very aware that this may cause anxiety in some students and I will handle it factually and sensitively. I will try to let you know in advance of the upcoming drills and any discussion about theses at home may help and would be appreciated.
The first weeks of school can be a mixed bag of emotions for both parents and children alike. The children handle the "long" day fairly well and I usually don't anticipate any difficulties our first official week. You, as the parents however, may experience some tired children and maybe more than one melt down. Although it may not help please know that this is completely typical.
Early the first week a large plastic bag will come home in your child's backpack. Everyday your child will bring home this communication bag and give you whatever is in it. Please empty it and encourage YOUR CHILD to put it back in his backpack. The bag should come to and from school daily. If you have a note for me it can be placed in it. Please encourage your child to take responsibility of it. Creating independence for your child is one of the goals of kindergarten.
Halloween will be right around the corner. We will plan a Halloween party for the 31st of Oct. More details will come out closer to the date. Children are welcome to come to school dressed in their costumes, but be aware they will be going out for recess so if costumes are elaborate perhaps a modified version could be arranged for school and the whole costume for the actual night.
Here is a video of
some children's first day of school. It will show your child what is to come and maybe help your child if he is feeling nervous. If you are looking for more first day of school type stories click here, at check out this tech and it will bring you to some. Enjoy! |
